UW AWARE and Residence Life receive national excellence award

University of Wyoming students visit while eating dinner Monday in Washakie ‘s Dining Call. All incoming freshmen at UW are required to complete an online educational course about alcohol abuse and its effects. This requirement, and other parts of the partnership between UW’s Alcohol Wellness Alternatives, Research and Education (AWARE) Program and Residence Life and Dining Services, earned UW a national award for work in alcohol abuse prevention. Teen drinking continues to be a problem in Wyoming.

Nearly 42 percent of high-school students who took the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey had at least one drink of alcohol in the last 30 days.

Results of the statewide survey -- released Wednesday by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jim McBride -- show nearly 37 percent of middle school students had a drink. (Read More)

Wyoming gets additional Discretionary Grant funding

The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs (OJP) today announced more than $24 million in awards to enforce state and local underage drinking laws nationwide. The awards are made through the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) program, which supports law enforcement, public education, and coalition building activities to address underage access to and consumption of alcohol. We draw the line!’ Campaign urges graduates to make smart choices about alcohol

Approximately 165 students will congregate on May 30 in the Evanston High School auditorium to commemorate graduation.
Tera Lawler, EHS AAMP advisor, and Suzanne Seppala, Uinta Tobacco Prevention Program advisor, said they are asking students and parents to stay safe this year by complying with alcohol laws. (Read More)

SCSO program targets underage drinking

Everyone knows that you must be 21 or older to buy alcohol, yet it seems inevitable that underage drinkers slip through the ID cracks and manage to have a night out on the town or head home with a six-pack under their arm. The First Lady’s Initiative, a program started in Wyoming several years ago and instituted by the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) aims at making sure anyone who looks like they could be under 30 has to pull out their mug shot and ID and prove their right to purchase booze. First lady teaches kids about dangers of alcohol

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Wyoming’s First Lady Nancy Freudenthal is visiting Fremont County this week. She’s talking to fourth and fifth graders about the dangers of alcohol and underage drinking. Joining her in the effort at Wind River and Dubois elementary schools will be Tauna Richardson of the Fremont County Prevention Framework and the Fellowship of Christian. (Read More)

‘Sting’ brings alcohol service under fire

Council hears public input about drive-up liquor windows

Several weeks ago, an Evanston High School group, known as AAMP! (Aspiring Attitudes Mission Possible!) presented to the City Council the idea of banning drive-up liquor windows in the community, citing drunken driving statistics, and appealing to common sense regarding minors utilizing the windows to obtain alcohol illegally. Alcohol-related reports are up in Gillette, but it's not all bad

The Gillette Police Department’s recent increased emphasis on preventing alcohol-related crimes through stricter liquor licensing requirements is bearing fruit, with most of Gillette’s bars and liquor serving establishments showing a decrease in assaults and other serious crimes this year.
