WYOMING FIRST LADY'S INITIATIVE TO

REDUCE CHILDHOOD DRINKING

Douglas Police Chief Lori Emmert

As a result of the February 14 Town Hall Meeting, the Douglas City Council took a lead role in addressing underage drinking by supporting ordinance changes around youth access and challenged our liquor dealers and the adult public to become responsible role models. A proposed amendment and addition to our Liquor License ordinance was passed and approved on First Reading February 28, 2005. It sets forth new guidelines for the renewal of liquor licenses and alcohol server training requirements. The ordinance outlines clearly for the liquor dealers in Douglas the basic actions that may be taken by the Douglas City Council concerning the non-renewal of their liquor license.

Local coalitions came together following the town hall meeting and coordinated their efforts to support the First Lady’s Initiatives in Douglas, Glenrock, and Lusk. The WFLI posters have been distributed by all three coalitions, placemats with local statistics will be placed at our local restaurants and local community members are providing the “voice” for our messages by doing Public Service Announcements with our radio stations. The local newspaper is providing space for the ”camera ready art” from the initiative and our local youth organization, “Douglas Alliance of Youth”, has taken an active roll in our media campaign and the Faith Based Community has become also active in the initiative and local churches have begun putting the WFLI messages in their Sunday Bulletins

With the new level of community involvement we have achieved in Douglas, along with continued diligence in our efforts to communicate the tragic consequences of this problem, I believe we will see changes in the statistics and alcohol culture in Douglas and Wyoming
