June, 2009
Congratulations
to the City of Evanston, the City Council, Mayor Davis, Tera
Lawlar, Suzanne Seppala and the Evanston High School youth
group, Aspiring Attitudes: Mission Possible (AAMP), on the
recent ordinance to prohibit the sale of alcoholic or malt
beverages through a drive-up area!
Alcohol is
pervasive in the lives of our young people; it is the most
widely used substance of abuse among American youth and
Wyoming’s number one youth drug problem. By age 15,
approximately half of all boys and girls have had a whole
alcohol drink (not just sips). Yet a child who starts drinking
before age 15 is more than five times as likely to have a
problem with alcohol than one who waits until age 21. Research
is showing that a child’s developing brain could be negatively
affected by alcohol use. Working together, we can change these
statistics, and the recent leadership displayed by the Evanston
City Council is a part of that change.
The best way to
fight alcohol misuse is to stop it before it happens - through
prevention - especially those efforts aimed at protecting our
young people. I agree with the Evanston City Council’s Finding
that “…prohibiting the sale of alcohol and malt beverages
through drive-up areas would reduce DWI offenses within the
community and discourage the purchase of alcohol by under-age
persons and thereby promote the public’s health and safety.”

We have a lot
of work to do in our communities to reduce childhood drinking,
and it is our collective responsibility to keep our children
alcohol free. The Evanston community is to be commended for
taking action to make a difference and I applaud them for it.
Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Nancy Freudenthal
